A New Healthier Habit In 30 Days

Submitted by on May 5, 2008 – 10:13 amNo Comment

Most of us often set weight loss goals, only to give up after a few weeks. Me too. I know how dissapointed it feels when you give up on your weight loss goals without seeing any results at all. Often, we find that the reason we fail is because we have certain bad habits that prevents us from reaching our goals. Here’s how we can remove these bad habits from our lives: Adopt a new habit which you will follow no matter what for 30 days.

A new habit in the next 30 days

For the next 30 days, you are going to pick one negative habit you have, and replace it with a good one. For every single day of the next 30 days, you are going to carry out that good habit, no matter how bad you feel.

I have a sweet tooth, and it is a very sweet one. Coke, Ice Lemon Tea, Ice Cream, they were my all time favourite junk foods . I would consume at least one of those items everyday and that slowed down my weight loss by a lot. I realised that in order to lose all my excess weight successfully, I would need to shed off this bad habit of eating sweet junk food everyday.

One habit at a time

I had a few other bad habits which were slowing down my weight loss, such as my laziness which causes me to favour my bed over the treadmill. However, I figured out that no matter how much exercise I did, as long as my diet was not in check, I would not achieve my goals. I focused to stop consuming sweet drinks and foods. For the next 30 days, everytime I had a craving for coke, I would instead drink water. Instead of chocolate smoothies, I would opt for a chocolate flavored protein shake.

It was tough initially. For the first few days, it just felt kind of terrible. As I sat down reading or doing my work, my brain would start thinking of drinking a nice cold bottle of coke. I constantly reminded myself that it was only for 30 days, and after 30 days, I can drink as much coke as I would want to.

Get a friend’s support

I wrote down the promise to myself in my journal. I told all my closest friends and I told them I will DEFINITELY do it. My friends were very supportive, and they would constantly remind me whenever I started craving for sweet stuff while we were out. This also made me reconsider my thoughts again everytime my hand reached out to that cold can of coke because I did not want to break the words I had given to my friends! The moment I opened that can of coke is the moment when my friends will see me as one who puts no weight into his words. Definitely not something I wanted.

Suprisingly, after a week or so, I noticed that these cravings had reduced. They were no longer as strong, and I did not feel those cravings so often anymore! In fact, I had started to like drinking water and protein shakes. As the days passed by, I felt even more motivated because I had been keeping track of my progress in my journal, and boy, was I amazed by how far I’ve went! The remaining days passed by quickly, and when day 31 came for me to drink as much coke and stuff in as much ice cream as I wanted, the urge has dissapeared totally. There, one bad habit succesfully curbed. =)
